What is a Nikah Certificate?

What is a nikah certificate, and is it Islamically valid or just for display?

A nikah certificate is a document that records an Islamic marriage and is proof that the nikah took place. It includes the names of the bride and groom, witnesses, wali, and corresponding signatures.

Raeesa Studio Nikah Certificates hold Islamic validity as full Muslim marriage contracts provided that the Mahr is stated on the certificate. You have the flexibility to personalize the Mahr directly on our website once you have selected your preferred design. It is entirely up to you whether or not you wish to include the Mahr on the certificate.

Opting to keep your certificate as a keepsake without the Mahr is also a viable choice. Many of our couples choose not to include their Mahr but instead keep it as a memento, honoring the memory of their nikah.

What's the difference between a nikah certificate and nikah contract/nikkahnama?

A nikah certificate and nikah contract/nikkahnama both refer to the document that is signed during an Islamic marriage. The nikah certificate refers to a general document that shows proof that the nikah took place, whereas a nikah contract/nikkahnama outlines the rights and responsibilities of the couple.

Ultimately, they are both the same thing except that the nikah contract/nikkahnama has more information such as the mahr and conditions.

Raeesa Studio Nikah Certificates can serve as fully Sharia-compliant nikah contracts by simply including the Mahr. We also offer optional additional pages with the same design and hand-painted embellishments if you’d like to include additional conditions. You’re free to customize the text on your certificate, and upon request, we can send your finalized text directly to your officiant. It is important to note that our contracts do not serve as official government documents. It remains your responsibility to complete the official registration of your marriage with the appropriate local government authorities.

Do we need a signed nikah contract for a valid Islamic marriage?

No. A Muslim marriage contract does not have to be written on paper. The contract can be completed orally, as long as it meets the requirements of a valid nikah. However, it has become common for couples to have a written certificate that not only confirms their contract but also includes conditions, similar to a pre-nup.

A written contract may still be required if your masjid, officiant, or local government asks for one for documentation purposes. In Western countries, your officiant will usually bring their own contract documents and may ask you to fill in necessary details for their records. You don’t need to worry about bringing the “correct” nikah papers, as long as you have a qualified and experienced officiant. These certificates have been signed by numerous couples worldwide, including those in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and various European and Asian countries, at their nikah ceremonies.

It is important to note that while our nikah certificates hold Islamic validity as Muslim marriage contracts, they do not serve as official government documents. It remains your responsibility to complete the official registration of your marriage with the appropriate local government authorities.

When do I sign this?

When you receive your certificate, simply bring it with you to your nikah ceremony along with any government paperwork you may need. After it’s signed, many couples choose to display it at other wedding events or frame it as a beautiful keepsake for their home.

The signing happens during the nikah or katb al-katib ceremony, which is the religious marriage ceremony. While some cultures treat this gathering like an engagement event, once the document is signed, the marriage becomes valid in Islam.

The people present for the signing include the bride and groom, witnesses, a wali (if required), and the imam or officiant. We can customize the signature spaces on your certificate to include just the bride and groom, or whichever parties you prefer, based on your selections on the order form.

How do I order?

and completing the order form on the product page.

2. Afterwards, click "add to cart" and proceed to the checkout.

Once your order is confirmed, you'll receive an order confirmation via email, containing the details you provided on the order form. Please review it thoroughly to ensure all the information is accurate. If you find any inaccuracies that need correction, kindly reach out to us immediately. Please note that changes cannot be guaranteed after 24 hours.

Where are you based?

We’re located in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. If it’s convenient, you’re welcome to select our local pickup option at checkout.

When will my order arrive?

Your order takes 4–5 business days to create before it is dispatched for shipping. Pick-up orders are ready in 4 business days. Shipping begins after your order has been dispatched.

For customers in the U.S. and Canada, we recommend placing your order as early as possible, ideally at least 4 weeks in advance, to allow for any potential shipping delays. For orders outside North America, we recommend placing your order at least 2 months in advance.

If your order includes additional customizations such as a couple’s crest, color changes, or text changes, please note that these require a longer production time. Custom orders have an extended processing window of 10 business days. You will receive an email preview within 5 business days of placing your order, and once you give final approval, it will take an additional 5 business days before your certificate is dispatched for shipping.

Does the certificate include a frame or pen?

Frames and pens are only included in our bundles.

Certificates by themselves do not come with a frame or pen, however, can be purchased separately.

What will be written on the certificate?

View our certificate text here. Raeesa Studio nikah certificate texts have been approved by Islamic scholars and are applicable to all sects. All certificates include hand-composed Arabic calligraphy of the basmala with Surah Ar-Rum and translation at the top.

You can request for changes to the text, on the “text changes” section on the order form after choosing a design.

What customization options are available?

Our standard customization options include adding the names of the groom and bride, along with the date, location, mahr, and signature areas. You can also choose the order in which the groom or bride's name appears, select different fonts for the couple's names, and specify the number of witnesses. We are continuously expanding our range of customization choices!

For extra customization, you have the option to add a couple's crest, make text adjustments, change colors, add extra marriage condition pages, and more. You can explore all the customization choices once you've selected a design.
